mantle plume

mantle plume
GLOSSARY OF VOLCANIC TERMS
An elliptical, drop-shaped mass of mantle that ascends toward the earth's crust due to its relatively lower density relative to the adjacent mantle. The density contrast is commonly the result of higher heat content of the plume, but may also be the result of chemical anomalies within the mantle (Perfit and Davidson, 2000, p. 89: Sigurdsson, 2000, p. 271). Mantle plumes are associated with intraplate rifting and volcanism. Mantle plumes are the hypothetical cause of hot spots (Hooper, 2000, p. 345).
